Apart from Christ, every other religion and system of belief of any kind boils down to works and effort. Paul refers to this as the “elemental spirits of the world” or “elemental principles of the world.” If we do not live according do Christ and salvation in Him, we allow ourselves to be taken captive by one of these philosophies, empty lies, and human traditions. We are taken back to slavery. However, in Christ, we have been given true life and freedom.
